The developer made me do it!
“The developer made me do it” is an unacceptable excuse for writing something or doing something that goes against standard writing practices and common sense. Don’t get me wrong. I make concessions for developers to be able to make deadlines. However, I keep my original writing and let my manager know who gets credit for the mediocre writing, bad diction, or confusing graphic.
Because I keep my original write ups, when the document goes to the next revision, I can negotiate further changes by referencing the style guide, manuals from other companies, or an internal authority can referee which version the company wants to use. I don’t always win my case, but I do my job. Sometimes this approach leads to important discussions or decisions on tactics.
